Freedom For the Whole

Freedom For the Whole

$800.00

25.25 x 19.25-inch hand-pulled monotype on archival paper. This monotype comes framed in a beautiful minimalistic custom wood white frame made with premium hardwood and UV-protective glass.

The concept for this piece comes from the group show curated by Sarah Magnatta, “Spirit Resonance,” which took place at McNichols Civic Center in Denver, CO in early 2020 but was concluded early due to the Pandemic:

“In the 6th century, critic Xie He proposed a key component necessary for a successful work of art: the “spirit resonance.” Without this element—this vitality— there was no need to look further. Today, through monotype, lithography, screenprint, and collagraphy, the six artists in this exhibition all grapple with notions of balance and harmony in their work; the lack of figural representation requires something else to connect with the audience. It is the spirit resonance, and though it is indescribable, it is also indispensable.” - Sarah Magnatta, Curator & Assistant Professor, Global Contemporary Art, the University of Denver.

What is a monotype? A unique print, typically painterly in effect, made by applying paint or printing ink to a flat sheet of metal, glass, or plastic. The painted image is transferred to paper either by manually rubbing or using a press. Mediums are applied to the plate using two different methods. In the additive, or “light-field,” technique, ink or paint is applied directly to the plate, often with a brush. In the subtractive, or “dark-field,” technique, the plate is covered with a layer of ink or paint, and the image is formed by manipulating and removing the ink or paint using a variety of tools, including brushes, rags, or the artist’s fingers. Each plate typically yields one monotype, but subsequent pulls (sometimes called “ghost impressions” because of their relative faintness) can be made from the residual mediums on the plate.
